Refugee Week

Refugee Week is a worldwide event that takes place every year around the UN’s World Refugee Day on 20 June.

In Australia, it’s an opportunity for people to experience the rich diversity of our refugee communities through theatre, music, dance, film and other events – and to celebrate the positive contribution refugees make to our society.

What it's all about

Refugee Week takes place between 17-23 June this year. In Australia, it’s a nationwide program of arts, cultural and other events that celebrate the contribution of refugees to our society, and encourages better understanding between communities.

The main focus of Refugee Week is to educate people about refugees, what brought them here and the challenges they’ve faced. By hearing their stories, we can appreciate who they are and think about how we can work together to make our communities safer and more welcoming for them.

We’ve been celebrating Refugee Week in Australia since 1986. It’s organised by the Refugee Council of Australia, which represents over 200 organisations who support refugees and asylum seekers. Anyone can get involved – individuals, advocates, faith groups, schools, organisations, artists and communities.

Since its inception, the Ration Challenge has always been held in Refugee Week.

#withrefugees

Every year has a theme to guide celebrations – this year’s is #WithRefugees.

Refugees have the right to be treated with dignity and respect, and we believe that it’s up to all of us to stand #WithRefugees to make sure that happens. With more refugees and displaced people in the world than ever before, now is the time to do whatever we can to help refugees both here and overseas.

Refugee Week gives us an opportunity to do something positive. That’s why we think it’s a great time to do the Ration Challenge! Once again this year, the Ration Challenge community will be working together to change hearts and minds at home, and raise vital funds to support refugees and other vulnerable communities overseas.
