Take the
Ration Challenge

… and show refugees we’re with
them, not against them.

Are you up for the challenge?

Eat the same rations as a Syrian refugee during Refugee Week – just a small amount of rice, flour, lentils, chick peas, beans, fish and oil – and get sponsored to do it. The money you raise will provide food, medicine and education for refugees; and support other communities around the world threatened by conflict and disaster. You’ll be making a real difference and showing refugees we’re with them, not against them.

Living on rations

We’ve designed the Ration Challenge to reflect, as closely as we can, what it’s like to eat rations as a Syrian refugee in Jordan. Your ration pack will contain exactly the same food that is distributed to refugees. You may get a shock – it’s not much for a week!

Just a small amount of rice, flour, lentils, chick peas, beans, fish and oil. And only water to drink. That’s it. No meat, no coffee, no alcohol!

Vegetarian or vegan? We’ll remove the sardines from your pack and you can eat an alternative e.g. swap sardines for tofu.

If you work hard on your fundraising, you’ll be able to ‘earn’ extra ingredients – for example, a spice or flavouring or a fresh vegetable of your choice – to add to your ration pack.

So the friends, families and colleagues who are willing to sponsor you will be playing a crucial role in helping you make it through the week, as well as providing vital funds to support refugees.

“Taking part in the Ration Challenge was a chance to be part of something bigger than myself.

I felt that I could finally be part of a community taking action against an injustice that I often feel helpless about and show refugees we’re with them, not against them.”

Key questions answered

What if I’m a vegetarian or vegan?

You can still take part! Everything in the ration pack is suitable for vegans and vegetarians except the sardines. When you register, we’ll give you the option to have your sardines removed from your pack. You can replace the sardines with 125g of tofu, or other alternative of your choice.

When does the Ration Challenge take place?

The Ration Challenge is held in Refugee Week, from Sunday 17 June – Sunday 24 June 2018. However, if you’re busy in that week due to work, school or family commitments, you can choose to do the Challenge at another time.

Can students and schools take part?

Yes! The Ration Challenge is available for schools for the first time this year. Visit our schools page for more information and to register your interest.
